5 Things You Need To Know Before Having Lip Fillers

Posted on January 24th, 2023

The rise of Lip Filler treatment has been well-documented for some time. This type of treatment can be so subtle and natural that no one apart from yourself and your practitioner needs to know you’ve had it done, just friends saying "wow you look fabulous." or some people, yes not just girls, who want a bit more Mwah and the ability to Pout like a pro.

What are the questions you should be asking, and what can you expect from the treatment itself? Ask to see photos of your chosen practitioner’s work and make sure they are a certified and insured, “Look at their previous clients to check that their perception of what ‘natural’ looks like matches up Make sure you feel comfortable with the person behind the needle.”

Ask for a hyaluronic acid filler

“I personally only ever recommend using a hyaluronic acid-based filler, such as Revolax, which also contain Lidocaine. The technique will also ensure that the injections are administered in the correct tissue plane and with the appropriate volume, so you don’t get left with a ‘shelf’ or ‘duck lips’. However, the quality of the product is what will ensure longevity, lower risk of migration and a smooth, natural-looking finish. My current favourite lip-filler products are Revolax and Regenovue. New products are always coming on to the market and we like to stay informed of all new products,

Have no fear

While asking for numbing cream before your treatment can help to minimise any discomfort, so can the choice of filler that you opt for, we always opt for “With my go-to lip filler choices of Revolax, this contains lidocaine (local anaesthetic). Additionally, I numb the client with a topical anaesthetic cream prior to injections, but it really depends on the client’s pain tolerance. I would say that most people find the injections slightly uncomfortable but generally not painful. I think it is usually psychosomatic – clients who have a fear of needles may find it painful, whereas clients who are relaxed about needles do not seem to find it painful, I do have some clients who enjoy it too!”

Expect slight swelling

“Immediately after filler you can expect your lips to look slightly swollen, “This should not be too severe. If any bruising is going to occur, you can disguise it with make-up, although I advise waiting 24 hours before applying lipstick.”

Slowly does it

The key is to not get too much filler in one go, and that might mean more than one trip to your aesthetician. “‘Less is more’ and ‘Rome was not built in a day.' “You need to be realistic about your expectations and choose a practitioner who will guide you wisely. After your initial lip-filler treatment, you may want a ‘top-up’ at six weeks if you liked the look of them when they were swollen directly after the first treatment. However, if you are looking for a more natural-looking result then every six to 12 months will be ideal.”
